NEW DELHI:Shapoorji Pallonji Engineering & Construction (SP E&C), a leading Indian engineering and construction major, has accomplished many milestones and records over its long history of 154 years. Health, Safety and Environment compliances are accorded the highest priorities in SP E&C.

The management and the operations teams follow the established HSE processes to ensure the safety and well-being of the staff and workmen at all the construction projects. The high standards that are followed and the HSE performance has been acknowledged by leading industry organisations on many occasions. Recently, one of the projects accomplished an extraordinary feat by remaining free from reportable injury since commencement and clocking more than 50 million injury-free manhours in the process till date.

The ITPO-Integrated Exhibition cum Convention Centre project at Pragati Maidan, Delhi in India, is a project of gigantic proportions. The convention centre is 120 m wide, 185 m long, and 32.4 m high. Spread across 50,000 sqm, this huge facility is designed to accommodate up to 7,000 delegates. Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. Pvt. Ltd. – Shapoorji Pallonji Qatar WLL JV is the EPC contractor for this high-visibility project and is mandated to deliver a state-of-the-art, world-class MiCE destination that will be one of the best in the world. This milestone is an outstanding accomplishment for a building construction project in India.

The construction of this iconic facility involves massive structural works and many high-risk activities. These include hundreds of columns that are 32 meters high, roof trusses spanning up to 120m and each weighing around 550 MT. SP E&C has engaged a workforce of ~5,000 workers, supervisors and E&C staff to ensure parallel construction on multiple work fronts on this spread-out complex.

In addition, SP E&C has deployed over 700 lifting equipment and numerous other construction vehicles and equipment to address the vast scope of works being handled. The construction works are in progress amidst a host of logistical challenges and associated challenges of schedule and cost.

The HSE performance of the ITPO project team has also been recognised earlier by prominent industry organisations. The project has received many HSE Awards in the recent past viz., Golden Peacock, CIDC, NSCI, ICC and Apex India HSE awards. These awards demonstrate the fact that the team has consistently maintained very high standards of HSE on the ITPO project. Although the latest achievement of 50 million safe manhours is an important milestone for the project and thus a special one, the SP E&C team at ITPO is focused on completing the project while maintaining its stellar record of HSE performance.
