KOLKATA (INDIA): The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill 2016 was passed in the West Bengal Assembly to simplify the assessment and collection of property tax and make the entire process more transparent.
State’s Municipal Affairs Minister Firhad Hakim said that it was necessary to amend the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act, 1980 to empower the KMC to limit the increase as well as decrease in property tax to a certain extent under Unit Area Assessment system from the present system of assessment by applying a cap on it.
With this bill, self assessment of one’s property tax would be possible minus the ‘inspector raj’, he said.
In calculating the interest payable, a fraction of a rupee in the amount of the bill on which the interest is to be calculated shall be rounded off to the nearest rupee, fifty paise being treated as rupee one, Hakim said.
